South High School teacher Samantha Koehler-Overton said she enjoys advising the group Educators Rising.
Students may wonder: What is Educators Rising?
According to Koehler-Overton, “Educators Rising is a national organization that supports middle school, high school and early college students who are interested in becoming educators. It is a career and technical student organization for education-pathway students. Every summer, there is a national conference where thousands of students from around the country go to learn and compete for a chance to earn top-10 national rankings in their projects, such as speeches, creating children’s books or bulletin boards, or showcasing the amazing things we do at our school.”
When asked about the purpose of Educators Rising, Koehler-Overton said, “The purpose is to grow the next generation of teachers by helping middle school and high school students explore the profession in a supported, hands-on environment. It also allows students who are thinking about education as a future career to explore in a fun, low-stress environment.”
She added that all grade levels may join the group. Students in the education pathway receive additional benefits, including free membership dues, first choice of competitions and discounts on trips to state and national conferences.
So, what benefits do students get from joining?
“Joining Educators Rising gives students the chance to explore teaching as a possible career. They also develop leadership and communication skills. Members can participate in state and national competitions, attend conferences and work with peers who share similar goals,” she said. “Being involved also looks strong on college and scholarship applications, especially for students considering education, and helps students learn how they can make a positive impact on their school and community. And it’s fun!”
If you’re wondering what happens during a meeting, Koehler-Overton explained: “We typically have our chapter officers introduce the meeting, do an icebreaker and then get into the main agenda. This could include planning Nightmare on L Street activities or other community service events, such as working with Spring Lake parent nights. We might also plan fundraising activities like the snack cart, candy cane grams and selling items at conferences or home basketball games. Our main focus right now is deciding on competitions for the state conference in February. This event allows students to compete for a chance to take their project to nationals.”
Activities sponsored by Educators Rising include Nightmare on L Street, the snack cart, candy cane grams, a fall trip to Vala’s Pumpkin Patch and Apple Orchard, Teacher Appreciation Week gifts, spirit boosts during finals week, College Signing Week for seniors pursuing education degrees, Educators Rising Week and Education Appreciation Night during basketball season.
