If you’re looking to watch a show that takes you on an emotional roller coaster, this show is perfect for you.
The Netflix series “Anne with an E” is based on the 1908 novel “Anne of Green Gables” by Lucy Maud Montgomery. This show provides room for viewers to feel enlightened, puzzled, sorrowful, and more. The series focuses on Anne, an orphan who, for as long as she can remember, has attempted to fit in with her peers and find a stable, permanent home. Most significantly, Anne sought love and care.
Throughout the show, issues such as gender inequality, racism, trauma, and various other injustices are brought to light. Anne has struggled with heavy psychological trauma that has stuck with her for many years. During her early years in the orphanage, Anne was picked on by everyone around her. Girls would make a ruckus when they were not supposed to, blaming Anne for the commotion.
She also had a troubled upbringing. Adults did not consider Anne trustworthy, as she was always rambling about something or someone from her imagination. She also frequently irritated people with her loquacious and chatty demeanor.
Anne’s extraordinary imaginative mind was always at work. She imagined herself as “Princess Cordelia,” sleeping in a blossoming tree, or as a ravishing and elegant bride wearing puff sleeves. Being a bride is one of Anne’s biggest aspirations. “It is my highest ideal of earthly bliss,” she said. However, Anne would often counter and dispute ideas that women should only stay home cooking or cleaning.
This show is very entertaining and keeps viewers engaged, waiting to see what happens next. There is so much going on; it’s intriguingly interesting. The show was unfortunately discontinued in 2019. Some key parts of the show are different from the book; however, it’s up to the viewer to decide how they feel about the comparison of the two. The ending is quite fulfilling, as one of Anne’s main conflict was finally resolved.
