KZB, a new K-pop club at South High, has officially begun.
Founder Shaylin Sanchez and co-founder Yoelle Hernandez, both freshmen, started KZB back at Marrs Middle School and wanted to continue their club at South. During the summer, Sanchez reached out to dance instructor Danielle Laurion and asked Laurion to serve as sponsor of the club.
Laurion agreed as she is also a sponsor of a UNO Hip-Hop club where she teaches different dance styles including K-pop. Laurion said the reason she sponsored it is because she believed that it would encourage students to step out of their bubble, learn new dance styles and give them the chance to try new opportunities.
Currently, Sanchez serves as dance instructor because Laurion wanted to give Sanchez the opportunity to teach. “I will always be there to help assist Shaylin if it’s needed, but as of now, she has it all under control and is doing well,” Laurion explained.
When asked how KBZ’s first meeting went, Laurion said the group did well. Students showed up, Sanchez broke down the movements of “Chk Chk Boom” by Stray Kids and everyone started to get to know each other. It was a perfect first day! With high hopes, Laurion believes if KZB continues to grow, they will get to do a piece at a dance recital.
Don’t be afraid to join KZB because you believe the dances will be too extreme. Dances will be kept at a middle range of difficulty and will include a variety of different K-pop groups. Another benefit is there are no requirements needed to join! All Laurion asks is to be OK with only wearing socks or bare feet on the dance floor.
“If you’ve seen something about the club and are interested, but you are too timid about joining the group, don’t be! If you find it interesting and believe you can do it, then do so,” Laurion added.
Meetings are held every Tuesday in room 149 from 3:30-4:30 p.m.
