When it comes to being a cheer captain some people may think it is all about uniforms, makeup and hair bows. Omaha South senior Anahi Torres shared her thoughts on what it is really like being a cheer captain for South’s cheer team.
What are some of your favorite parts about being a cheer captain?
Torres: My favorite part about being cheer captain is getting to know everyone of my teammates and working with them closely! And being able to encourage them in a way that is efficient for them.
What motivates you to keep going as a cheer captain?
Torres: Being able to see everyone’s personal growths. Over the years I have seen my teammates excel in their jumps, stunts and performances. This motivates me to keep leading and to keep being a positive person they can go to.
What are some difficulties or down sides about being a cheer captain?
Torres: Learning how to balance a friendship and leadership role! Sometimes it’s difficult to balance the two, but the biggest thing to remember is that at the end of the day we all have big responsibilities.
What are some of your plans after you graduate high school?
Torres: I plan to attend a four-year university out of state to study neurology to become a neurologist.
What are some of your favorite memories with your teammates?
Torres: Some of my favorite memories include getting ready with senior Samantha (Sami) before the games and getting sweet treats with her afterwards.
What would you say to someone who is scared to try out for cheer or be a cheer captain?
Torres: To always be confident in your capabilities and know that you can do things that are scary. Sometimes the best risks are the scary ones.
