Science teacher Matthew Schollars has spent the past six years helping students strengthen their understanding of science while continuing to grow as an educator.
Schollars said his passion for learning and helping others led him to pursue a career in education. In the classroom, he focuses on supporting student growth and creating an environment where learning feels approachable. “I’ve always liked helping people and learning,” he said.
Throughout his teaching career, Schollars said he has developed stronger communication skills and improved the way he presents material to students. He believes clear explanations are key to student success. “I’ve learned better ways to explain it,” he said.
Schollars encourages students interested in science to stay organized, enjoy the learning process and collaborate with others. He said working with classmates can help students better understand challenging concepts and build confidence. “Keep track of things, have fun with it and work with others,” he advised.
In addition to teaching content, Schollars said he values helping students develop skills they can use beyond the classroom, such as teamwork and responsibility. He said creating positive relationships with students helps make learning more effective and engaging.
To manage stressful days, Schollars said he relies on creative and physical activities. “I paint and exercise,” he said. Although he has years of classroom experience, Schollars admitted that speaking in front of large groups remains one of his personal challenges.
Outside of school, Schollars gives swimming lessons and enjoys reading, playing games and swimming. He said balancing his professional and personal interests helps him stay motivated as an educator.
Schollars said his biggest motivation as a teacher comes from watching students grow over time. “Seeing the progress of people and how they’re doing keeps me going,” he said.
If he were not a teacher, Schollars said he would still pursue a career related to science, adding that his interest in the subject extends beyond the classroom.
