Omaha South teacher and coach Joseph Maass said he enjoyed high school so much that he wanted a similar environment when he began his career. Maass started teaching at South in 1999.
He said his favorite part of teaching is building friendships and helping students.
“One piece of advice I would give a student before graduating is, whatever job you do, focus on showing up,” he said.
Outside of school, Maass coaches club soccer and referees on weekends. He said he started coaching because he was always involved in sports growing up and that coaching comes naturally to him.
Maass said he enjoys coaching soccer and has always done it, adding that being successful makes it even more fun.
“To get where I am today, I had to attend high school, college and extracurriculars to improve,” he said.
He shared his favorite memory as a coach: the 2013 South soccer team beating Creighton Prep 3-0 in the state final. The team went 23-0 that season, scoring 133 goals and conceding only three, also defeating Prep three times.
“The best team in Nebraska high school history,” he added.
