As the 2025 graduating class of South High Magnet School enters their final year, seniors are experiencing a whirlwind of emotions. Ranging from excitement and pride to nerves and nostalgia. From academic challenges to unforgettable memories, each student’s story paints a vivid picture of what it means to be a senior standing at the edge of adulthood.
For Xiomara Chaidez Rodriguez, who’s spent all four years at South, the transition into senior year is bittersweet.
“It’s a whirl of emotions nostalgic, nervous, but excited all at the same time,” Rodriguez said. “I made so many memories, and I will be starting a new chapter in my life after graduating. It all feels so unreal.”
College applications at at the top of her worries. “It’s such a big step for my future, and there’s so many requirements and deadlines,” she said. Despite the stress, she reflects proudly on her academic growth and memories, including a standout trip to Oklahoma with TRIO during her sophomore year.
Sofia Benavidez Sandoval echoed that sentiment. As a four-year student, she says being a senior feels “bittersweet.”
“It’s exciting knowing that I’ve made it this far, but I’m nervous for what’s to come,” she said. She describes her high school experience as “bipolar—some days are good and some days are bad,” but ultimately a time of growth. Her advice to underclassmen? “Stay focused, don’t give up, and PUT THAT DARN PHONE AWAY!”
For Travis Hlavinka, who transferred to South just this year, the adjustment came with both nerves and optimism.
“Meeting a lot of new people and keeping my grades right was a challenge,” Hlavinka said. “But I’ve had fun playing sports like basketball and making friends.” Despite only being at South for half a year, he says he’s “kinda sad” about leaving, but excited for what’s next. His biggest pride? “My family. They’ve been my strongest support.”
Some students like Emmanuel Galindo, who’s also been at South for all four years, kept their senior stress at bay. “Nothing really makes me nervous, I just make sure I stay on track,” he said Galindos high school experience was what he expected it would be, although there’s obviously bumps he had to watch out for. “Weird teachers and weird students” But overall he’s happy to be moving on and encourages underclassmen to stay ahead academically. “Get all your classes out of the way so you can get early release,” he advised.
Acalia Hernandez Cruz describes high school as an “eye-opening experience.”
“It really shows you what life might be like outside of school,” she said. For her, district semifinals stand out as a core memory, thanks to the support from South High fans. “The love was so uplifting and just memorable.” Her proudest moment came during sophomore year when her show choir class took first place at the Omaha North Viking Cup. Now, as she prepares to graduate, she’s focused on college acceptances and scholarships. And looking back realizing she will miss seeing her teachers and friend on a daily basis.
Meanwhile, Sindy Gallegos summed up her high school journey with three words: “Lit, crazy, and a movie.” From earning straight A’s to dancing the night away at prom—and even sneaking out to the afterparty—she embraced the highs and lows of her teenage years.
Her advice for next year’s seniors? “YOLO. Enjoy it. It feels like a party every day. Don’t take anything for granted, since this is your last year.”
Whether it was fighting academic pressure, navigating friendships, or cherishing once-in-a-lifetime moments, the Class of 2026 has a shared understanding: high school is a chapter unlike any other. With the finish line in sight, these students leave behind more than just classrooms—they leave a legacy of resilience, growth, and unforgettable memories.
As their time at South draws to an end, one thing is clear: the future is bright, and these seniors are ready to meet it head-on.
