South students earn honors in state journalism contest
February 12, 2026
Jack Wildrick and Brianna Zendejas-Trejo walked away with awards from the Nebraska JEA Winter Contest.

Omaha South High has journalism award winners walking its halls.

Junior Jack Wildrick and freshman Brianna Zendejas-Trejo both walked away with wins in the Nebraska Journalism Education Association’s (JEA) Winter Contest.

Wildrick received an Excellent award for his Newspaper Sports Feature on teacher and coach Djuan Johnson, and Zendejas-Trejo walked away with an Honorable Mention award in the Action Photography category for her photo of junior softball player Makenzie Wolf. Both pieces were featured in The Tooter this fall.

JEA supports free and responsible scholastic journalism by providing resources and educational opportunities as well as promotes professionalism among teachers and students. This year’s winter contest received more than 850 entries from across the state.
