Here at South High School there are many clubs and opportunities. One of them is fashion club, a club where students get to express their love for fashion and learn how to make their own pieces starting from the basics. In order to join this club, you do need to be taking a fashion class.
Mary Breedlove, one of the club’s sponsors, said the club started about nine years ago and that Sara Policky started it as a co-sponsor. “Before me, we built it into a more structured club. We are using our fashion club for our fashion show,” Policky said.
Breedlove said, “I like that it is less structured than a regular class. You get to know the students.” Policky added, “I like students who show up more. Getting to see all ages and grades and seeing students who don’t have classes together work together.”
The biggest challenge coming into this club is “time commitment. Some students are in other clubs and sports, and they also have fashion club. I’m also bad at time commitment. It’s hard,” Policky said.
“It’s a successful club. We have the fashion show. We plan and do community outreach programs, adopt a family over the weekend, reach out to community partners and work with them,” Policky said.
Hannah Cervantes, a freshman at South High, said she really liked her textile class, so she thought joining the fashion club would help her find things of interest, help with her sewing projects and meet people with the same interest.
When asked about her passion for fashion and when she realized it was something she was passionate about, she said, “I think I started to notice when I realized I was good at sewing. I’ve never sewn before. I’m able to express myself freely, and I’ve never been able to do that creatively.”
She said the things she has learned in fashion club were more sewing techniques and better communication. Something she will never forget from this club is “getting closer to the teachers. You get to connect with them in a less ‘professional’ manner,” Cervantes said.
The future of this club is very exciting for all members. “I’m excited to go on our New York trip in fall 2027,” Cervantes said.
Sophomore Joey DeSantiago, who just joined the club this year, said the reason she joined fashion club was to have an opportunity to spend more time with her friends outside of class.
When asked if she thinks this club is inclusive, she said, “Yes, anyone who already takes a fashion class can join.” DeSantiago said one important thing she learned participating in the fashion club is how to use her creativity and how to try new things. “This upcoming year we are going to New York, and I’m very excited for that,” DeSantiago added.
The South High Fashion Club is a very open and safe space for students to feel free and creative while still being at school. Anyone who is interested in becoming a member can get in contact with either Sara Policky or Mary Breedlove.
Be on the lookout for the fashion show this spring!
