While many students use social media to consume content, Oscar “David” Molina is part of a growing group at Omaha South who are producing it.
Through his account, broadcastingwitdavi, available on Instagram, Molina has built a platform that bridges the gap between high school and real world situations.
Why did you start the account?
I decided to start my broadcasting account towards the end of my eighth grade year because many people were uninformed of school events, lunch menus, weather and other school information. Recently, I started to promote events going on in the world to infrom others of what was going on in community.
What made you want to do broadcasting?
Broadcasting seemed like something only big news anchors could do; it seemed impossible and truly it’s a lot of work. But my classmates and peers around me always wanted to know what was going on during specific days. They wanted to know the full truth, and they would come to me looking for those answers, hence me doing broadcasting.
Why did broadcasting interest you?
There’s a lot of misinformation that is constantly being spread around online, and I wanted to be the person that anyone could come to without worrying if I was a reliable source. If something happened in our community, I would have to spend a lot of time to ensure it was coming from a credible source, and I had plenty of information to share that information with others.
While you’re managing your broadcasting account, how do you manage that while having schoolwork, work and your extracurriculars?
Honestly, I don’t know how I manage it, especially since I’m in Packers for Action, Student Council, South High Spotlight, Nebraska College Preparatory Academy (NCPA), Douglas County Sheriff’s Explorers, Partnership 4 Kids (P4K), Multilingual Ally Student Association, Latino Leaders and Senior Class Cabinet. It’s honestly a lot of time spent on ensuring that everything is perfected. I spend any amount of time I have free, whether that’s after work, during lunch or advisement, after school, at night, etc.
What do you hope the audiences take away from your content?
I hope that my audience is informed properly of anything going on around our community and to not believe everything you see online.
If someone wants to start a broadcasting account, what would you tell them?
Put yourself out there; ensure you have reliable and credible sources; take breaks; and find that point where you can manage and balance your time.
