Now in their second year of high school, South sophomores are looking forward to setting ambitious goals for themselves.
Juan Molina-Rodriguez, Marely Valdovinos Silva and Rebeca Gil all have goals of getting to classes on time, turning in their work and having good grades throughout the year.
These three students said they learned about and overcame numerous obstacles during their freshman year. One of those struggles was arriving on time for classes.
Molina said he was struggling to get to his classes on time because some of his classes were far away from each other. Molina said he overcame this by walking faster and minding his own business in the hallways.
Another thing Molina said he struggled with in some of his classes was understanding the subject and what was going on in class, but he overcame this by keeping a motivational mindset, not giving up and trying harder.
Valdovinos said she also struggled with a class, specifically algebra 1-2. Valdovinos said she did not understand anything the teacher was teaching, and she also could not focus on class. Valdovinos said she conquered this issue by studying on her own outside of school, watching videos that taught the unit and asking her friends and classmates to help her.
Gil said she struggled with math, as well. She said she is not good at math; she hates it and struggled to get a good grade. Gil said she overcame this by focusing more and talking to her counselor. Gil said she recommends trying this if you are struggling.
Even though some South High Packers struggled with classes their first year, Molina, Gil and Valdovinos have faith that this year will be better for them; they’re highly optimistic about this year because they now have a little bit more experience with high school.
Molina said he strongly believes this year will be better for him now that he is more focused and engaged with his classes. Valdovinos also said she feels this year will be good for her now that that she has high expectations for high school. She added that she is more familiar with her classes this year just like Gil. She also believes this year will be good because she enjoys her classes and is confident this year will be her year.
These sophomores said this year has been better than last year because they like their new classes and are looking forward to trying new activities to find what they are interested in.
Molina said he wants to be on time to classes and get good grades.
Valdovinos’ goal for this year is to get to school on time in the mornings. She also wants to get good grades in math by earning an A.
Gil shares the same goals of getting good grades but also wants to work on turning in her work on time and to not have any work missing.
Some things these sophomores said they have learned from last year are to take high school more seriously and to take advantage of the many opportunities here at South. All three agreed that South is a good school.
Molina said South is a very laid-back school where you just do your work. Valdovinos said it is a good school if you keep yourself out of unnecessary things like drama or fighting.
Gil said she likes it because the counselors and teachers are very empathetic with their students.
“They really help and push you to succeed in your classes, so you are able to graduate,” she added.
All three sophomores agreed this year will be a good year if they try and make it a good year.
