All first-year students at South High School experience things differently.
Some quickly get used to the unfamiliar environment while others struggle and have a rockier first few months. Luckily, freshmen Itzelle Diaz and Alena Gutierrez have started their first year at South strong, are involved in sports and are looking into joining extracurriculars.
When asked, “What is your favorite class so far?” Diaz said, “My favorite class so far would be honors biology; the teacher is very welcoming and makes the lessons fun. He also keeps you busy; the class is never boring.”
Lunch at South does not amuse Diaz; the fruits and vegetables are all she likes. Diaz is mostly looking forward to pep rallies this year because classes go by faster on pep rally days.
Diaz believes that the high school environment and policies are different from middle school. “Honestly high school is less strict on when you can or can’t use your phone, and you have a lot more freedom,” she said.
Diaz said that social and open-minded teacher Alex Menendez made an impact on her. Freshman academy teacher Menendez is Diaz’s favorite teacher because he interacts well with his students.
So far, Diaz’s favorite thing about South is how simple and accessible it is to join clubs and sports.
Freshman Alena Gutierrez came from Bryan Middle School. Her favorite things about being at South are the school’s red and white colors. Gutierrez said, “The colors are why I came to South because Bryan’s school colors aren’t cute.”
When asked if she believes that high school is different than middle school, Gutierrez said there is not much of a difference because they have similar school policies.
Gutierrez’s favorite class here at South is beginning ceramics and sculpture because she likes making sculptures and playing around with clay.
Gutierrez said sports seasons are what she is looking forward to most this year. “I can’t wait for basketball and track season to start because I’m excited for the tournaments.”
