As leaves fall and a spooky atmosphere settles over Omaha South High, a chilling question is in the air: What is your favorite scary movie? With Halloween approaching quickly, let’s uncover the films that have haunted South High students. From the classic slashers that have been passed down through generations to the more modern thrillers that twist your mind, get ready for a nostalgic scream fest as we explore the movies that make students shiver with delight — and terror.
South students were asked one simple question: What’s your favorite scary movie? Senior Kristopher Plascencia-Loza, junior Jefferson Argueta, senior Jennifer Ayala-Resendiz, freshman Samuel Armas and senior Nathalia Linares-Flores shared their most-loved terrors.
Plascencia-Loza: I like watching “The Conjuring 2.” It’s based off a real-life poltergeist case; it’s the best out of the series. My sister showed me this movie. I was scared of that stuff when I was younger, but when I was finally ready, that’s the one she showed me, and I’ve liked it ever since.
Argueta: My favorite movie to watch this time of year is “The Love Witch.” I found it on Tubi. It’s dark and spooky yet vibrant in a way. It also has a 1960s vibe to it.
Ayala-Resendiz: My favorite scary movie is “Jennifer’s Body.” It had good cinematography, a great soundtrack and overall the plot is really interesting. It interested me because it had Megan Fox as a boy-eating monster.
Armas: The Rob Zombie movie “Halloween” is definitely my favorite. It reminds me of Halloween when I was younger. My dad was the one who showed me it for the first time. I don’t think it’s that scary — for a first-time viewer it can be pretty predictable a lot of the time, but it has a nostalgic vibe.
Linares-Flores: “Child’s Play” is my favorite scary movie. Even though some people might not consider it scary, I still enjoy it. I like it because that was the first scary movie my mom showed me. I find the way Chucky walks kind of cute and silly, and it fits the Halloween aesthetic. I remember being super scared of Chucky when I was younger.
