Do you like board games? Well, who doesn’t? These are some of South’s favorites.
Journalism teacher Deana Colón said that as a child, her favorite game to play was Monopoly. She said the game brings back important memories as she and her brother used to play it together as children.
Colón listed other favorite games she loved growing up including Battleship, Farkle, Yahtzee and Operation.
As a teacher Colón collects games for her students to play during downtime instead of allowing students to scroll on their phones. “One of my favorite games I used to play with my brother was Operation. I loved it so much I bought it for my classes to play. The first time students got it out, I braced myself for the horrible buzzing and shaking,” she said. “I was shocked when instead of shaking the entire table, now you just get a gentle little ‘bzzz’ sound.”
Colón added that at one point, her grandmother created a homemade Sorry board for her and her brother when they couldn’t afford to buy one. “If I start playing one of those games, I wouldn’t be able to stop playing; it’s like an addiction.”
Science teacher Daniel Kubik said his favorite game has always been Scattergories because when he was a child, his family bought it, and it became a family tradition to play on every vacation or trip.
Kubik added that he also enjoys the game Axis and Allies and used to play it with his brothers. “My brothers and I, before we hated each other, would play it for days,” Kubik said. He said he later learned that they had been playing it wrong when he watched someone online play it correctly.
Sophomore Clara Soto said one of her favorite games is Skip-Bo, a game in which you are a pawn and “skip” over other pawns and collect them. The person with the most pawns wins.
Junior Beverly Montalvo said that Nintendo’s Wii games are her family’s favorites. Montalvo said that she and her family like sports games as they are athletic, and they like competition.
When asked how the games normally end, she said, “My brother throws the remote into the TV.”
