GThe film “8 Mile” is a semi-autobiographical movie starring rapper Eminem and was released in 2002.
“8 Mile” follows the story of a young rapper named Jimmy Smith Jr., also known as B-Rabbit or Rabbit, who lives in Detroit. Jimmy struggles with family and personal issues throughout the movie along with trying to fit in with other rappers.
Jimmy breaks up with his girlfriend and is forced to move back into his mom’s trailer with her boyfriend (with whom Jimmy does not get along) and his little sister, Lily.
Jimmy also struggles to fit in with other rappers because he is white, and the rappers use his skin color against him. One night, Jimmy gets the opportunity to battle against a rapper, but he chokes up on stage and loses faith in himself. Despite the fact that Jimmy doesn’t believe in himself anymore, he has a very supportive friends group who pushes and encourages him to keep trying. He redeems himself in the end after going through all the traumatic experiences it took him to get there.
I believe this movie was well cast, and all the actors gave amazing performances, especially Eminem as this was his first major acting role. I also thought all the actors fit their roles, and the songs chosen for this movie were perfect.
The movie definitely gives off ‘90s vibes, the period in which this movie was set, by its use of fashion, music and cultural references. This movie also evoked a bunch of different emotions, both good and bad, and made me feel like I was actually in the film.
I loved how this movie is based on Eminem’s actual life as a teenager. Even though it is not completely realistic, it was inspired by his experiences as a young rapper. This movie is a drama but contains some romance along with important life lessons and comedic relief. There is violence in this movie, but it adds character and shows how hard it can be for certain people to grow up in this kind of setting.
My favorite part of the movie is when Jimmy takes care of his sister and acts like she is his kid and would do anything to protect her as it reminds me of my brother and me. I also really like the fact that Eminem wrote the song “Lose Yourself” specifically for the film and that it became one of his most popular songs.
Overall, I would rate this movie four stars out of five, and I believe people who are interested in rap – or anyone who appreciates a good underdog story – should watch this movie because it’s inspiring and encourages people to never give up on their dreams.
This movie is rated R and contains mature themes that may not be appropriate for younger viewers. Parental discretion is always advised.
