The television show “Gossip Girl,” which premiered on the CW in 2007, quickly became a hit. Now showing on Netflix, the show gained a massive following, attracted millions of viewers worldwide and became one of the most iconic teen dramas of the 2000s. With its scandalous storylines, iconic characters and luxurious Manhattan setting, it’s no wonder why this show remains popular and garners so much love.
“Gossip Girl” is a teen drama that revolves around the lives of privileged high school friends Serena, Blair, Nate, Chuck, Dan and Jenny. The series focuses on the lifestyles between Brooklyn and the Upper East Side of New York City.
This show is narrated by an anonymous blogger, Gossip Girl, whose famous words are, “You know you love me. XOXO, Gossip Girl.” Someone in the show pulls the characters’ strings by publishing their every move on social media through posts revealing their personal lives, relationships and secrets. These characters’ lives are constantly being exposed by the anonymous blogger which leads to secrets revealed, relationships tested and drama that never ends.
In my own experience watching the series, this is what most stood out to me – the characters’ iconic fashion styles; they capture the essence of early 2000s luxury and Y2K fashion.
The main girl characters in the show have a mix of everything. Blair Waldorf, my favorite character, has a preppy-chic expensive fashion look mixed with elegance and expensive brands like Chanel, Dior, Valentino, Givenchy, Louboutin and more. Her mom was a fashion designer who owned a clothing business called Waldorf Designs which explains why her fashion is so stylish and elegant.
Next up is Serena van der Woodsen. Her style is a bohemian aesthetic with flowy dresses, edgy pieces and lots of layered jewelry. She also wears a lot of expensive brands like Waldorf.
Another main girl in this show is Jenny Humphrey. Her style changed around season two. She went from light, bright, colorful and preppy clothes to edgy, dark and more of a punk aesthetic.
On the other side of the Upper East Side, the females aren’t the only ones who rule the fashion scene. One of the main male characters is Chuck Bass. He dresses very businesslike as he grew up learning how to run an empire like his father. Bass wears lots of suits and designer pieces.
Nate Archibald, another main character, is known for dressing like the “Golden Boy” by wearing comfortable yet expensive clothes like polo shirts and clothing in different shades of blue.
Lastly the last main male character is Dan Humphrey; he wears casual clothes and always carries a crossbody bag on him. He and his sister Jenny never wear expensive clothes like the Upper East Side characters because they are both from Brooklyn. Overall, the glamour and outfits really make the show catch your eye.
But fashion isn’t the only thing that stands out to me in this show. I love how “Gossip Girl” shows the beauty of the party life in New York City as well as all the fancy grand events they attend; I could watch this show over and over for years.
I also love how the show has many plot twists and always leaves me shocked and wanting more; it’s honestly addicting. It’s crazy how the show can keep drama and suspense going for six seasons. The only problem I had was with who ended up with whom toward the end, but you’ll need to watch the series to find out those secrets.
Overall, this show will make you gasp, laugh and cry, but it’s more than just a high school mean girl thing; it’s about these teenagers who learned from their past. This has to be one of the best shows I’ve ever watched. I find it my comfort show, and I definitely recommend this show to anyone who wants to watch a new series.
If you haven’t already, join the Upper East Side elite and indulge in the scandalous world of “Gossip Girl.”
