College is an institution where students pursue higher education after completing high school. While many students have a goal of getting into college, not everyone can afford it, or it may just not fit into their plans. Many people, however, still end up with successful careers without attending college. Junior Kristopher Plascencia-Loza and senior Joselyn Martinez-Ceballos shared their thoughts about the value of attending college.
Do you believe a college degree is necessary for career success?
Plascencia-Loza: I think a college degree is not needed to be able to be successful but depending on what you want your career to be, college may be needed.
Martinez-Ceballos: Yes, I do believe that having a college degree and having higher education opens up many more opportunities than those without a higher education and degree.
Do you plan to go to college?
Plascencia-Loza: Yes, but I am still exploring careers, so I am not that sure.
Martinez-Ceballos: I do plan on going to college because I want to study nursing.
What do you think are some benefits of attending college?
Plascencia-Loza: Well, getting your degree for what you study for is very helpful, and it can teach you many things for when you are an adult.
Martinez-Ceballos: Some benefits are having more job opportunities that require higher education. College also helps build critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and it helps you network by making connections with students, professors and professionals.
Do you think college education is worth the financial investment?
Plascencia-Loza: I don’t think college is worth the investment, but if someone really wants a higher education, and they know they will find a use for it, then it is worth the investment.
Martinez-Ceballos: I think it’s worth it depending on your career goal. Some careers prioritize skill and experience rather than a degree.
College isn’t for everyone, and that’s why high school prepares students for both work and college.
