Kellie Mihovk, one of Omaha South High’s librarians, shared what gives her joy as a librarian.
Mihovk said her roots in education can be traced back to the area of special education. During her first teaching job, she said that her classroom was directly across from the school library. She said she would think to herself, “That is something I would like to do.”
Mihovk said she began taking additional classes to become certified in library sciences and began working at Bryan High School. Eventually she learned of a library opening at South. “I was really lucky; South was my top choice,” she said.
Mihovk said she likes working at South for many reasons. “I love South because it’s in South Omaha. I went to elementary school down the street from here; it was really lucky that I was able to come here.”
Now Mihovk said she comes to school every day with a smile and a positive attitude. As for her happy attitude, she said she thinks she’s just pretty positive in general.
“I love my job; I can’t think of a better position in the school. I get to talk to kids in a different way,” Mihovk said. And not only does Mihovk enjoy socializing with the students at South, but she also enjoys the books. “I get to look at books, order books and think about what other people would like.”
“I like being in the library because it’s a space for students where you don’t have to do anything; you can just be here.”
Mihovk advises today’s students to read more often. With reading, “you learn about new things you don’t get to see every day and expand your mind.”
