Omaha South is lucky to have Maureen Gregor as head of the Guidance Office. After 12 years of work, Gregor has made a big difference in many students’ lives.
Gregor said she was inspired by her mom who was also a counselor. Even though she didn’t always want to be a counselor, Gregor said she loved helping people before finding her way into the job at South. She said she was interested in science and public service at first but realized counseling was her true calling because she wanted to help the community.
To become a counselor, Gregor said she spent six years in higher education, but the big investment only shows how dedicated she is to her career. “Becoming a counselor is very expensive,” Gregor added, but said she thinks the rewards are totally worth it.
Gregor said her favorite part of her job is working with people and helping them out. Her daily routine includes checking emails, working with credit recovery, responding to student needs and attending support meetings. She also talks with students about college and helps them set up their classes for the next year.
Before coming to South, Gregor said she worked at Liberty Elementary and McMillan Middle schools as a counselor and even held a job at United Postal Service (UPS) during college. She said she chose South because of the welcoming community and the awesome people who work at the school.
In her free time, Gregor said she loves watching movies, hiking, taking walks, reading, and spending time with her family and friends. With two kids of her own, she knows how important family and community are.
When asked if she would recommend a career in counseling, she said, “Definitely! It’s a great job.”
Gregor is a perfect example of dedication and kindness. Students have said they are grateful for everything she does and the positive impact she has had on them.
