Omaha South High’s Video Game Club offers something for everyone.
Teacher Blake Sondergaard is the sponsor of the club, which is a place where friends can meet to enjoy socializing as well as playing the games they love.
Sondergaard has been the sponsor for a little more than three years and has been teaching English for seven years.
The club consists of nearly 25 people, but Sondergaard said that they “get about 10 students who are regulars that show up for every meeting.”
Sondergaard said the club is very laid-back, and there are not many requirements to join. “Just don’t act like an idiot,” he said jokingly.
Something very intriguing about the club is the fact that all the equipment, games and television were donated to them, therefore students who do not have the luxury of games in their household can enjoy them right after school.
Sondergaard said while the group does not compete against other schools, members do compete against each other. “The club is extremely casual. We never have and never will go against other schools; that’s more of an E-Sports kind of thing.”
Sondergaard also said he sometimes plays games with the students. A couple of games he personally plays are “Space Marines” and “Bio Shock” on his PS5.
“I mainly enjoy any first-person shooter game with a good story,” he said; for example, he likes the game “God of War.”
After three years of being the sponsor of the Video Game Club, Sondergaard said his favorite thing about being there is seeing the students change over time and building friendships with one another. He loves the environment the students create, and he gives them a good time in return.
South High’s Video Game Club meets in room 461, every other Friday, from 3:15 p.m. to 5 p.m.
