Most OPS schools do not have a girls’ football team. The game, according to many, is competitive, rough, requires strong players and a lot of skills.
But is there interest in a girls’ team at South? The answers vary.
Junior Yulissa Ramirez said she doesn’t think South has a girls’ teams because “it’s a tough competition with a lot of requirements that need to be met in order to hold a team and perform well on the field.”
However, some South students say they would watch and support a girls’ football team if South had one. In fact, South had a girl start out the football season on the boys’ team. According to sophomore Kassy Shumway, “If we had a girls’ football team, I would actually go to the games.”
Some students are opposed to having a team for the girls or do not think it would get much attention. Junior Vontrell Ray said, “I don’t think girls would really care if our school had a girls’ football team.”
But what about the game’s reputation?
Junior Sarah Nava Rios said, “I feel like it would not affect anything, but people would see we are more inclusive with women’s sports and may bring up our winning streak.”
While the opinions are split, students generally agreed that it would be fun to see girls step out on the field and show what they can do.
“Like I tell my history classes, if enough female students came forward, we could have a girls football team,” coach Adam Wildrick said. “I think it would be great.”
