Alexandra Welna, South High volleyball coach for the last three years, said she loves what she does because the community feels like a “big family of trust and commitment.”
Welna said she makes sure to always wear a smile and bring a positive and strong work ethic even if she’s not up to the task at that moment. She also tries to make sure her players, students and peers know she’s approachable, always willing to lend a helping hand and extend resources to those who need it.
Ten years from now, Welna said she hopes to have completed her administrative degree and the remodeling of her home. Welna said she takes pride in her job and has a warm heart toward the communities of which she is a part.
When asked how she deals with the stress of balancing work and her home life, Welna said, “I do what I can and try not to stress about not being able to do everything. I have learned that moments with family are irreplaceable, and everything else can wait temporarily and get done later.” Welna said she puts family first and makes sure that if she ever needs a break from work, she can count on her family to relieve her stress and help her to relax and recollect for the next day.
Welna also said she has a role model for her life. “I have always looked up to my mother; she has always found a way to make everything work out and never makes anyone feel like they are a bother. I have also always been a big fan of John Cook. If you know, you know.” Cook is the head volleyball coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
In Welna’s free time, she said she enjoys watching the Nebraska volleyball and football games. Along with painting and spending quality time with her family in nature, Welna has four pets: three dogs named Rosco, Cerberus and Tank and a bearded dragon named Mushu.
