If you like building or programing things, then maybe you should think about joining South High’s Robotics Club.
Students who have an interest in engineering, computer science, coding or technology would enjoy being part of the robotics team, club adviser Leo Fogel said. Even “if you just like to play video games or be part of a team, robotics would also be good for you or anyone, and everyone is welcomed.” Robotics club is held in Room 017 every Wednesday.
South also hosts the Tom Dickey Memorial Robotics Tournament, which is named after a former South staff member and which will be held November 2. Fogel said teams will arrive at 7 a.m. at which time they will have their robots inspected and then get them ready for the tournament.
There are qualification matches and elimination matches with up to 50 teams and five people on each team, and teams will be coming from both in and out of the state.
“Most teams will build up two to three robots” either from scratch or by making changes to existing robots, Fogel said. Building a robot can take teams hours or weeks, but programing will only take about an hour after which they will then test the robots. There is no need for any type of skill or requirement to join the robotics club; you can just show up.
“One of the things I love about robotics is that it is really good for anyone,” said Fogel. There are so many areas of interest connected to robotics, he added, that most people can find something they like about it.
