Omaha South held its first annual Latino Festival Saturday where people were greeted by games, prizes, music and companies representing South Omaha.
“This event was put together by Latino Leaders and the fine arts department here at South High School,” said Gabriela Lopez Lemus, a South Spanish teacher. Lopez Lemus also said that this event was organized to finish off Hispanic Heritage Month strong, so they decided to promote the event to companies who then came out to show their support.
Kenny Baires, South band teacher, said the event offers an opportunity for the school and students to collaborate with South Omaha. “I know we do a lot to make sure that we represent our culture,” said Baires.
Dylan Lopez, a junior, said he liked the event because he got to hang out with his community. “This event brings people together,” said Lopez.
“I enjoy the energy, and I think it is so fun to interact with the kids and parents,” said Seleste Zarza-Valdez, a senior at South. Zarza-Valdez also said she liked being able to experience the community and meeting people she would not normally interact with outside of school.
Freshman Alexis Abarca-Miranda said he enjoyed playing his trumpet during the festival and hanging out with his friends. “The Latino fest promotes our culture and Hispanic roots,” he added.
“This event is an invitation for students and families to know more about the Latino community here at South High,” Lopez Lemus said. She also said that the event is helpful for families because they can come and learn more about the resources that are available to them.
Baires shared that the event celebrates his heritage by lightening the mood and reminding people that it is more than just a school district event. “We have our band playing songs that bring us together,” Baires added.
