Homecoming is just one of the many experiences students can enjoy here at South High School. Homecoming consists of a week full of fun events leading up to a semi-formal dance. Some of the activities during homecoming week include spirit week, a Friday football game, voting for homecoming royalty and a pep rally. Several South students decided they wanted to share their opinions of the celebration.
“It was a very fun night, everyone was dancing, people were dressed up nicely, and everyone was energetic and ready to dance,” said junior Ava Yang. This year was Yang’s third year attending South’s homecoming, and she said she has enjoyed it every year.
Homecoming is filled with a week of fun ways to show school spirit, such as dressing up for character day and throwback Thursday. “It is nice seeing people be creative and taking part during spirit week, including myself. Although there’s times when not a lot of students participate,” said junior Ruben Huizar. Some students agree with Huizar, claiming that school spirit could be better.
“We should encourage the students to participate more during these events; it would make these events so much better,” said junior Didier Solano.
“I think people should participate more! Voting for homecoming court, dressing up and showing school spirit would make the week a lot more enjoyable,” Yang added. As for the dance, “It was definitely a night to remember.”
Even freshmen got in on the fun this year. “It was an incredibly fun and new experience as a freshman. I enjoyed every moment,” said first-year student Cynthia Castro.
The highlight of the week was the dance, Huizar added, and Yang agreed. “Being able to go with friends and dance and just vibe makes the homecoming experience so much more enjoyable,” Yang said.
“It can be very fun especially if you’re around the right people,” Castro said. “There were people doing flips, carrying each other, and the dance circle was very fun as well.”
Solano recommends homecoming to anyone not sure what to expect. “I 100 percent recommend students attend. Make sure to bring energy and be enthusiastic!”
