As Nebraska is becoming more and more known as a volleyball state, the question on people’s minds is why doesn’t OPS offer volleyball for guys? 

According to freshman Chris Zagal, “Volleyball has not been seen like football or basketball has. It makes me disappointed and confused.” Zagal added that he was surprised coming to South, seeing the variety of clubs and sports offered but not seeing a guys’ volleyball team.   

Zagal said he grew up loving volleyball after his friends got him hooked on the sport while attending Marrs Middle.  Zagal loves the game and said it is easy to learn. Talking to teammates about their dedication to the sport is also a benefit. Zagal said that the sport is believed to not be very physical, but a player must use all his body to spike the ball, pass and dive for the ball, not to mention volleyball takes a lot of mental strength as one mistake can cost the whole game. 

Junior Omari Montes also wants to know what is up with the lack of a team for the guys. “I feel like, what’s the point of not having one?”  

Montes said he wants to spread the word to everyone about volleyball so that in the future South can have a guys’ volleyball team. Montes grew up playing volleyball because his mom influenced him with her own love for playing. As soon as he heard there was interest in a guys’ volleyball team at South, he was hooked and knew it would be good for the school.  

Senior Giovanna Franco said she feels “sad that there isn’t a guys’ volleyball team here at Omaha South because kids coming into high school seem like they would be interested in joining a team.” 

For Franco, volleyball helps clear her mind when she’s stressed with school or personal challenges. Franco has a love for the sport and is part of the girls’ volleyball team here at South; she also plays for a club outside of school. If South does not offer a guys’ team, they could offer a volleyball intermural opportunity, she said. 

“I am getting excited that there could be a guys’ volleyball team because I can’t wait to see if all the guys who talk smack are actually good,” Franco added.
