The final bell rings, backpacks are tossed over shoulders, yearbooks are getting signed, classrooms start to empty, and summer’s finally here. After months of waking up early, taking tests and pushing through long days, South High students are more than ready for a break. So, what’s everyone up to? From chasing fun to just catching up on sleep, this is how some students are spending their summer.
Lia Gonzalez, a sophomore, said she is all about having fun this summer. “This summer I want to have fun and be outside,” she said. She is not planning to work and just wants to relax. What’s one of her goals? “Buying myself new clothes.” Gonzalez also said she’s always wanted to go to Disneyland or Nickelodeon Universe. One thing she will do to get ready for next year is trying to read more. When asked about her dream summer day, she said she would go to Chicago with her friends.
Sophomore Brianna Vargas wants a mix of rest and fun. “I want to enjoy my break but also hang out,” she said. She said she might get a job if it’s flexible, but she’s also planning to work on cooking and make-up. To stay productive, she wants to stick to a light routine and be active. “I want to be consistent with working out or doing yoga.” Something she’s always wanted to do? “Go to a beach resort or road trip with friends.” Her perfect summer day? “Go on a yacht with my best friends, eat good food, play music and swim all day.”
Vanesa Garcia-Garcia is focused on making memories and being creative. “I want to have fun and make memories,” she said. She’s planning on getting a part-time job and wants to get better at photography and video editing. “I want to start a small blog or Instagram page for my photos.” She’s also heading to Texas to visit family. This summer, she wants to build confidence and get better at time management. Her dream day? “Go to a tropical island with my closest friends and have the ultimate beach day.”
Emma Hernandez said this year really wore her out. “I want to rest and have fun because this school year was tiring.” She’s not planning on working, but she does plan to get better at drawing and begin journaling more. When she’s unmotivated, she journals or cleans her room. Her summer goal? “Finish a book or series and actually stick with it.” Something she’s always wanted to try? “Camping and sleeping under the stars,” she said, adding she might travel to California, too. Her perfect day? “Go to Disneyland with family and friends, with no lines or crowds.”
